My question about an English language

Someone asked, 'Are you the Diogenes who doesn't believe in the existence of the gods?' He replied, 'And how could I be, when I consider you to be hateful to the gods?'

Does the last sentence mean Diogenes admitted he believed in the existence of the gods because he considered the gods disliked the person who asked him the question?

Thanks!
